Your thyroid produces thyroid hormone, which controls many activities in your body, including how fast you burn calories and how fast your heart beats. Diseases of the thyroid cause it to make either too much or too little of the hormone.

  • Hypothyroidism - Hypothyroidism is the opposite of hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland is underactive, and it can’t produce enough of its hormones
  • Thyroid nodules - lumps in the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroiditis - swelling of the thyroid
  • Goiter - enlargement of the thyroid gland
  • Thyroid Cancer - A cancer of the thyroid, the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck

RISK FACTORS

• Mostly affects a woman
• Have a family history of thyroid disease
• Have an autoimmune disease, such as type 1 diabetes or celiac disease.
• Have been treated with radioactive iodine or anti-thyroid medications.
• Received radiation to your neck or upper chest.
• Have had thyroid surgery (partial thyroidectomy)
